Travel Tips: 1. Apps, Maps and Timely Traps

This is pretty much the most important thing I will say on this still very young blog. "DOWNLOAD THE DISNEYLAND RESORT APP!"

I haven't been to Disneyland in two years but I still keep this app on my phone and regularly updated. It's great for live and accurate wait times, along with park maps, daily opening hours, and show times. Why would I keep it on my phone then? Well, until now, I didn't really need to know that the average wait time of Indiana Jones, between the hours of 6 and 7pm, was 45 minutes, in August 2017. Deep down though I knew that keeping this app would render my pointless knowledge marginally useful one day.

To download the app for free just head to your phone's app store and search Indiana Disneyland. It should be the first one that comes up.

Maps: For those who do not wish to download the app, please find the link to all park maps here. Having a good knowledge of these maps will make your trip so much easier and understanding future blog posts a breeze.

Opening Hours: Unlike most theme parks, and basically anywhere else ever, opening hours vary significantly at Disneyland. This can make planning your trip slightly more inconvenient, however, if you keep informed it shouldn't bother you too much.

Hours can range from 8am-midnight at Disneyland and 8am-11pm at California Adventure. Sometimes they open half an hour earlier (just for fun) and close earlier depending on the time of year, month or week. The best thing to do to get on top of these hours is check out the Disneyland Calender here. Alternatively check your app.

Despite these strange hours here are some general rules you can follow:
  • The lighter it is, the longer it's open. In Summer and other peak times the park generally stays open until midnight.
  • The second Park closes first: California Adventure closes earlier than Disneyland, usually not too long after the World of Colour Show ends.
  • The early bird gets the worm: Try to get to the entrance of either park at least half an hour before opening time. This cuts down queues at security check points and, you might even be there on a day they choose to open that little bit earlier!
Following these simple rules will hopefully help you avoid situations such as these...

Disneyland Park Overview

"Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world." - Walt Disney This has always been the case for Disneyland. Attractions and rides have come and gone since the 1955 opening yet the heritage and basic layout have (aside from expansion) always been preserved.  Disneyland 1955: Sourced from http://www.justdisney.com/disneyland/disneyland_photo_pages/aerial/aerial.html Currently, Disneyland consists of 8 major lands or themed areas. The round about looking area at the centre of the park (shown in both maps) is called The Hub; tying all areas together like the points of a compass. I will go through these lands briefly so you have an idea of what each area has to offer. Main Street USA is the first area you enter as you pass under the train station, into "The world of Yesterday, Tomorrow and Fantasy." It pays homage to Walt's Hometown of Marceline Missouri in 1910 and is prob...

Travel Tips: 3. Rider Switch and Beating the System

If Fastpass is your golden ticket then the Rider Switch program is Scrooge McDuck's vault. (Well, for parents and caregivers anyway.) In this post I will not only tell you all about the Rider Switch but also how to utilise it, along with Fastpass, to beat the system. What is Rider Switch? Rider Switch is a system for parents and caregivers with children who do not meet ride requirements or are not willing to go on certain attractions. It allows one parent to line up while the other waits outside of the attraction with the kids. At the end of the ride the parents swap, allowing the second to skip the line like a Fastpass. Not all attractions offer this but all the ones you'll want to use this for, should. How it Works: This is the simple part. Step 1: See the ride attendant and check to make sure that Rider Switch is available. You can see the full list of Rider Switch enabled attractions  here. Step 2: Divide your party into two groups; riders and non riders. Ride...
